ST. GEORGE, Utah — When eight year old Bob Bowden visited a family friend with his brothers and sisters, a father and son performed a small magic show for the energetic children. That brief moment of wonder sparked a passion that would span a lifetime.
“That year for Christmas, my parents gave me a magic set, and I have been doing it ever since,” Bowden said.
Growing up in the 1960s, Bowden immersed himself in the craft. He visited his local library each week to check out new magic books and studied classical icons including Harry Blackstone and Harry Houdini. As his passion developed, he drew inspiration from stage performers Doug Henning, James DeMir, Michael Finney and David Copperfield. Meeting DeMir in person became a turning point that inspired Bowden to refine his repertoire and technical skills.

Making Southern Utah Home
Bowden lived in Murray, Utah, near Salt Lake City, for 30 years. After visiting Southern Utah for 17 years as a winter resident, he moved to St. George permanently in 2019 following the passing of his wife. Since then, he has worked to build awareness for live magic entertainment in the local community.
Bowden has performed at school assemblies, family reunions and civic festivals including Hurricane Peach Days. He has also presented six themed shows for the city of St. George at Thunder Junction All Abilities Park during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

Across a career that has taken him to venues nationwide and internationally in China and Japan, Bowden said audience reactions remain universally genuine.
“People are people,” Bowden said. “I get the same response here as I get in other places. My whole goal when I do a show is to get that wide open mouth response and the big smile on their face. If I get that response, then I know I’ve done my job.”
Tailored Performances for Every Audience
Bowden keeps three distinct show formats ready for different audiences.
Children’s Events
An engaging building blocks theme pairs colorful attire with subtle educational ideas, including geometry and trigonometry.
Family Reunions
Visual comedy and magic bridge generations with routines designed for children, parents and grandparents.
Adult Events and Celebrations
Energetic, interactive performances are tailored to the room and the occasion.
Unexpectedly, Bowden’s most frequent booking category is bachelorette parties in Las Vegas. He regularly travels to resort venues, including Caesars Palace, to perform for lively groups.

Regardless of the event, Bowden gives each show a personal touch. When there is a guest of honor, such as a birthday child or a bride to be, he makes that person the star of the performance. At the end, the guest produces a magic keepsake to retain as a lasting memory.
More Than a Hobby
For Bowden, magic is far more than a pastime. It is a lifelong discipline that blends practice, showmanship and spontaneous communication.

“Magic is an art form,” Bowden said. “I have spent hours and hours learning how to perform these effects. It’s not a hobby for me. I get as much enjoyment out of it as the audience does. It doesn’t matter if I’ve done the same trick two thousand times. If they’re having a great time, I’m having a great time.”
