What happened aboard Flight 2311
A Delta Air Lines flight headed to Salt Lake City made a rapid emergency descent and diverted to Las Vegas on Sunday, September 6, after the crew reported a pressurization issue.
Flight 2311 departed Los Angeles International Airport and was cruising near 36,200 feet when it descended to about 9,000 feet over roughly ten minutes. Passenger oxygen masks deployed during the descent.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the Boeing 737 landed safely at Harry Reid International Airport around 6 p.m. local time. The agency is investigating the incident.
A dramatic descent with a safety purpose
A change of about 27,000 feet in ten minutes sounds extreme. During a pressurization emergency, however, the goal is to reach an altitude where occupants can breathe safely as quickly as conditions allow. Pilots use oxygen while air traffic controllers clear the airspace below them.
Delta said the crew followed its training and procedures to bring the aircraft to a safer altitude. Passengers deplaned normally in Las Vegas and were rebooked to continue to Salt Lake City.
What Utah travelers should know
The FAA has not announced the cause of the pressurization issue. That distinction matters because early reports can describe what the crew experienced, while the investigation must determine why it happened.
For Southern Utah travelers connecting through Salt Lake City, the incident is also a reminder that a sudden descent can be part of the trained response that brings an aircraft safely to the ground.
