A male rider was in critical condition following an early-morning single-vehicle crash involving a small gas-powered motorcycle in the White Dome area of St. George on Monday, July 27.

Incident Details and Crash Location

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene near 1572 W. White Dome Drive at approximately 2:52 a.m.

According to St. George Police Officer Tiffany Mitchell, the rider was traveling along a sidewalk and bike path prior to entering the roadway. Instead of utilizing an adjacent curb ramp, the vehicle struck the curb directly, causing the rider to be thrown from the motorcycle.

The individual was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision and sustained severe head injuries upon impact. The vehicle was described by authorities as a compact gas-powered motorcycle similar to budget models sold online.

Hospitalization and Pending Investigation

Responders transported the victim to St. George Regional Hospital, where he was immediately taken into surgery. Law enforcement officials noted that his injuries are life-threatening and his prognosis remains uncertain.

Police are currently investigating potential impairment, as preliminary reports indicated the rider may have consumed beer prior to the incident. Due to the urgency of the medical response, officers were unable to obtain a blood sample before the rider entered the operating room.

Helmet Efficacy and Utah Traffic Laws

Officer Mitchell emphasized that protective headgear likely would have altered the severity of the rider’s injuries.

  • Safety Statistics: Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicates that motorcycle helmets reduce rider fatality risks by 37% and are roughly 67% effective in preventing traumatic brain injuries. Riders without helmets face three times the risk of sustaining brain injuries compared to helmeted individuals.

  • State Requirements: Utah law mandates helmet usage only for motorcycle operators and passengers under 21 years of age. Adults aged 21 and older may legally ride without head protection.

  • Federal Recommendations: Federal safety organizations and traffic advocates continue to urge all riders, regardless of age or local legal mandates, to wear U.S. Department of Transportation-compliant helmets.

This report is based on preliminary statements provided by law enforcement personnel and reflects early investigative findings.
