As preparations continue for the sold-out St. George Marathon, runners crossing the finish line this year will be welcomed by a major upgrade at Vernon Worthen Park — a brand-new restroom facility.

City officials say the updated complex is part of a broader effort to improve parks and recreation spaces across the community.

New Bathroom Facility Under Construction

According to the city’s Parks and Community Services department, the new restroom area will include:

  • Family-style restroom spaces
  • Unisex restroom units
  • Larger event-style restroom areas with multiple stalls
  • Covered access areas for visitors and event crowds

The new structure will replace older restrooms that had been serving the park since the 1990s.

Improvements Arrive Before the 50th Anniversary Marathon

Construction on the project began earlier this year, with completion expected in September.

That timeline places the upgrade just weeks before the 50th anniversary of the St. George Marathon, where approximately 10,000 runners are expected to finish at Vernon Worthen Park.

While city leaders said the timing was not specifically planned around the marathon, officials acknowledged the project will be a welcome improvement for participants and spectators alike.

Part of a Larger Park Improvement Plan

The restroom project is one of several recreation improvements tied to a voter-approved parks and trails bond passed in 2023.

The bond provided funding for outdoor recreation projects throughout the city over a 25-year period.

Additional upgrades happening at Vernon Worthen Park include:

  • A newly built bandstand area
  • Playground surface improvements
  • General park renovations and updates

City officials say the goal is to modernize one of St. George’s most visited community gathering spaces.

Temporary Restrooms Available During Construction

While work continues, portable restrooms remain available for visitors using the park and nearby trails.

Additional temporary restroom facilities are also expected during marathon weekend to help accommodate large crowds.

A Busy Year for the St. George Marathon

The St. George Marathon continues to attract runners from across the country and remains one of Southern Utah’s biggest annual events.

With the race already sold out and the 50th anniversary approaching, city crews are working to ensure Vernon Worthen Park is ready to welcome thousands of visitors this fall.
