The FBI has released new findings following a tragic shooting last month at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse in Grand Blanc, Michigan, confirming that five people lost their lives and nine others were injured.
Investigators say the suspect, later identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, was fatally shot by police after authorities responded to the scene. The attack took place on September 28, just as Sunday services were about to begin.
Authorities revealed that Sanford drove his pickup truck through the front entrance of the church before opening fire with an assault-style weapon. He also set the building on fire, creating chaos as churchgoers tried to flee.
Sanford’s background and behavior in the weeks prior have since become a focus of the ongoing investigation. Officials describe him as a former Marine from Burton, Michigan, who appeared to be struggling with personal issues and had voiced anger toward organized religion.
People who interacted with Sanford in the days before the attack reported that he seemed emotionally unstable and had expressed hostile views toward the LDS Church. Investigators believe those beliefs played a role in the violent outburst.
